This toolbox talk focuses on IP ratings. The IP rating or IP code classifies the degree of protection provided by an enclosure, for electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72.5 kV. This standard defines levels of sealing effectiveness against “ingress”.

Below are the list of Solid and Liquid ratings:

Solid

  1. No Protection
  2. Protected against a solid object greater than 50mm such as a hand
  3. Protected against a solid object greater than 12,5mm such as a finger
  4. Protected against a solid object greater than 2,5mm such as a wire
  5. Protected against a solid object greater than 1,0mm such as a thin strap
  6. Dust protected limited ingress, no harmful deposits
  7. Dust tight. No ingress of dust

Liquid

  1. No protection
  2. Protected against water drops
  3. Protected against water drops at a 15-degree angle
  4. Protected against water drops at a 60-degree angle
  5. Protected against water splashing from any angle
  6. Protected against water from any angle
  7. Protected against powerful water jets and heavy seas
  8. Protected against effects of temporary submersion in water – 1m deep for 30min
  9. Protected against the effects of permanent submersion in water – 1m or more for more than 30min
